Off-Lead Walking Policy

Effective Date: 17/12/25

At Strawberry Paws, we understand that many dogs benefit from the freedom and exercise of off-lead play. However, the safety of your dog, the public, and other animals is our priority. This policy outlines the conditions under which a dog may be walked off-lead.

1. Written Consent Required

  • No dog in the care of Strawberry Paws will be let off-lead unless we have received a signed Off-Lead Consent Form from the Client.
  • Verbal permission is not sufficient; consent must be documented through our online booking system or a physical signature.

2. Assessment Period

  • All new dogs will be walked on a lead for a minimum of two to four weeks (or as long as the walker deems necessary).
  • This allow us to build a bond with your dog, assess their temperament, and test their recall in a controlled environment using a long-line lead before they are granted full off-lead freedom.

3. Recall Requirements

  • The Client confirms that their dog has a reliable and consistent recall and is responsive to basic commands.
  • If a dog’s recall begins to fail or the dog becomes easily distracted/disobedient, Strawberry Paws reserves the right to revert to on-lead walking for the safety of the animal.

4. Environment and Safety

Off-lead exercise will only take place in areas that the walker deems safe and appropriate. We will not let dogs off-lead in the following circumstances:

  • Near busy roads or car parks.
  • In areas with high livestock presence.
  • During extreme weather or poor visibility (e.g. heavy fog).
  • If the walker feels the current group dynamic is not suitable for off-lead play.

5. Bitches in Season and Un-neutered Males

  • Bitches in Season: Must be walked on-lead at all times for the duration of their heat cycle to prevent unwanted incidents.
  • Un-neutered Males: If an un-neutered male displays dominant or wandering behaviour, we reserve the right to keep them on-lead for safety.

6. Assumption of Risk and Liability

  • Inherent Risks: The Client acknowledges that letting a dog off-lead carries inherent risks, including the risk of the dog running away, getting injured, or being involved in a road traffic accident.
  • Third-Party Incidents: The Client remains legally responsible for any damage or injury caused by their dog to a third party or another animal while off-lead.
  • Indemnity: By signing the consent form, the Client agrees to indemnify Strawberry Paws against any claims, losses, or costs arising from the dog being off-lead, provided the walker has acted with reasonable care.

7. Final Discretion

  • The decision to let a dog off-lead on any given day lies solely with the walker.
  • If a walker feels a dog is “off” or the environment is unsafe, the dog will remain on-lead. This decision is made in the animal’s best interest and does not entitle the Client to a refund.
