At Strawberry Paws, the health, safety, and well-being of the pets in our care are our primary concerns. We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach to weather; instead, our care is tailored to the individual.
1. Individual Welfare Assessment
We recognise that a pet’s ability to cope with weather varies significantly based on:
- Breed: (e.g. flat-faced breeds are at higher risk in heat; thin-coated breeds are at higher risk in cold).
- Age: (e.g. puppies and senior dogs often have less tolerance for extreme temperatures).
- Health Status: (e.g. dogs with heart conditions or mobility issues).
All decisions regarding the safety and duration of a walk are made on a case-by-case basis with the animal’s best welfare as the priority. The walker’s decision on the day is final.
2. Extreme Heat
We monitor temperatures and humidity levels closely.
- Heat Adjustments: If we determine the conditions are unsafe for your specific pet to exercise (typically above 24°C, but lower for certain breeds), we will provide a “Home Visit” instead.
- Home Visits: This includes garden let-outs, fresh water top-ups, and indoor mental enrichment or play to keep your pet cool and occupied without the risk of heatstroke or burnt paws.
3. Severe Cold, Snow, and Ice
In the event of heavy snow or dangerous icy conditions:
- Travel Safety: If local road conditions in LS15, LS25, or LS26 are deemed unsafe for travel, we may be forced to cancel or delay services.
- Paw Protection: Walks may be shortened if salt, grit, or extreme ice poses a risk to your dog’s paws or overall body temperature.
4. Storms and High Winds
During Met Office Amber or Red weather warnings:
- Safety First: We will avoid walking in wooded areas or parks where falling branches or debris may pose a risk.
- Fear of Thunder: Please inform us if your dog is fearful of storms so we can ensure they are kept safely indoors.
5. Heavy Rain
While we walk in the rain, torrential downpours or flooding may result in a shorter walk followed by towel-drying and indoor play.
- Owner Requirement: Please leave a towel by the door on rainy days so we can dry your pet before leaving them inside the home.
6. Notification and Charges
- Communication: We will always attempt to contact you as early as possible if weather conditions require a change to your scheduled service.
- Refunds: As these adjustments are made for the welfare of your pet, shortened walks or “Home Visit” substitutions are not eligible for partial refunds.
- Provider Cancellation: If we must cancel entirely due to unsafe travel conditions, you will be offered a full refund or service credit.
