Effective Date: 17/12/25
At Strawberry Paws, the safety of our staff, the public, and other animals is our absolute priority. This policy outlines our position on handling pets—both dogs and cats—that display aggressive or reactive tendencies.
1. Full Disclosure Requirement
- Honesty is Essential: During the initial enquiry, the Client must disclose any history of biting, scratching, lunging, or threatening behaviour toward humans or other animals.
- Specific Triggers: Owners must inform us of any known triggers (e.g., being touched in specific areas, fear of specific noises, or territorial behaviour around food/toys).
- Non-Disclosure: Failure to disclose a known history of aggression may lead to immediate termination of service without a refund.
2. Feline-Specific Safety (Pet Sitting)
While cats are generally smaller, their bites and scratches carry a high risk of infection and injury.
- Hiding and Stress: We understand cats may hide. We will never “force” a cat out of a hiding spot, as this often leads to defensive aggression.
- Restricted Areas: If a cat is known to be territorial in specific rooms, we ask that these areas be closed off prior to our visit.
- Handling: Unless necessary for medical administration (agreed in advance), we follow the cat’s lead for physical contact. If a cat shows signs of overstimulation or “swiping,” we will cease interaction immediately.
3. Canine-Specific Safety (Walking)
- Muzzles: If a dog is reactive or has a history of nipping, we may require the dog to wear a well-fitted basket muzzle. The Client must provide this and ensure the dog is muzzle-trained.
- Lead Control: Any dog with a history of reactivity will remain on-lead at all times.
- Solo Walks: Dogs with aggressive tendencies toward other animals will only be accepted for Solo Walks.
4. Right of Refusal & Trial Periods
- Assessment: Following a “Meet and Greet,” we reserve the right to refuse service if we feel a pet poses an unmanageable risk.
- Trial Period: All new clients are subject to a trial period. If a pet’s behaviour becomes unpredictable or dangerous during this time, we may withdraw our services immediately.
5. Incident Protocol & Liability
- Termination: In the event of a bite or serious aggressive display, we reserve the right to terminate the visit or walk immediately.
- Client Liability: The Client remains legally responsible for any damage or injury caused by their pet to the walker, a third party, or another animal.
- Refunds: If a service is terminated due to an undisclosed or sudden aggressive incident, no refund will be issued for that session.
6. Finality of Decision
The walker’s assessment of a pet’s behaviour and the associated safety risk is made based on professional experience and is final. We act in the interest of safety and animal welfare at all times.
