Every dog walker knows that no two days are ever quite the same, and today’s outing with the lovely Harry was a perfect example of that!
We decided to shake things up a bit by exploring some new woodland trails. Harry’s owner was kind enough to join us for the first few minutes to act as our guide and show us the best paths through the trees. While it’s always wonderful to share the trail, Harry is such a creature of habit that having his “pack” together for our usual one-on-one time was a bit of a surprise for him!
A Heart of Gold
When the time came for his owner to head back, Harry’s loyal nature really shone through. Being the devoted boy he is, he found it a little difficult to see his favourite human head in the opposite direction. He stayed rooted to the spot for a few minutes, whining softly and keeping a hopeful eye on the path behind us.
It’s moments like these that remind me just how deeply dogs connect with their families. For Harry, the “pack” had been separated, and he needed a little time to process that change.
Building Trust
During his moment of uncertainty, Harry stayed right by my side. It was a clear sign of the trust we’ve built together; even when he was feeling a bit anxious, he knew he could look to me for comfort.
With plenty of patience, some gentle reassurance, and—of course—a few high-value treats and cuddles, we slowly started to find our rhythm again. It didn’t take long for his curiosity to take over. As the sights and smells of the woods began to grab his attention, the worry melted away.
Back to His Happy Self
By the time we reached the heart of the woods, Harry was back to his usual, bouncy self, tail wagging and nose to the ground. It was a lovely reminder that while change can be a little daunting for our four-legged friends, a bit of extra love and patience goes a long way.
I’m so proud of how Harry handled his “big” adventure today. He’s a sensitive soul with a heart of gold, and I’m already looking forward to our next woodland wander!
