6 Tips To Help Keep Your Dogs Safe and Happy in the Summer

Summer is a great time for longer walks, outdoor adventures, and relaxing in the sun with your dog. However, hot weather can also be dangerous for dogs if owners are not careful as they can overheat much faster than humans, and even simple activities can become risky during heatwaves. To help you, here are some important summer safety tips to help keep your dog’s healthy, comfortable, and safe.

1. Protecting those paws

Pavements and roads can become extremely hot in summer and may burn a dog’s paws as they are known to be very sensitive so trying to walk your dogs at an earlier time before it gets too hot or later in the evening when the temperature is cooler will help massively for your pooches and will avoid any trouble of burnt paws. A simple way to check the ground is the “five-second rule” – if you cannot comfortably keep your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it is too hot for your dog. If there’s no good time to take them then its suggested to walk on grass throughout the walk rather than the pavement as its cooler. Checking your dogs paws after the walk to make sure that they aren’t cracked from the temperature will help your dogs health and wellbeing in the summer so both you and your dog can enjoy the summer together.

2. Always Bring Water

Dogs can become dehydrated quickly in warm weather, especially during walks or playtime. Carrying fresh water and a portable bowl whenever you go outside can help your dog out. Encourage -but don’t force- regular drinking breaks.

3. Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Even with windows slightly open, cars heat up rapidly and can become deadly within minutes. Heatstroke can happen very quickly and is a serious emergency. If a dog must travel in a car, ensure there is proper ventilation, water they can access, and never leave them unattended.

4. Provide Shade and Cool Areas

Dogs should always have access to shaded areas when outside. Indoors, keep rooms cool with fans, open windows, or cooling mats. Some dogs enjoy frozen treats or ice cubes as a way to cool down safely.

5. Be Careful Around Water

Many dogs enjoy swimming, but not all dogs are strong swimmers. Supervise dogs near pools, lakes, or beaches, and rinse them off afterwards to remove chlorine, salt, or algae that could irritate their skin.

6. Grooming Helps

Regular brushing can help remove excess fur and keep dogs more comfortable during hot weather. However, some breeds should not be shaved because their coats also help regulate temperature and protect their skin from sunburn.

Summer can be enjoyable for both dogs and owners when the right precautions are taken. Keeping dogs cool, hydrated, and protected from heat can prevent serious health risks and make walks and outdoor activities much safer. A little extra care during hot weather goes a long way in protecting a dog’s wellbeing.
